Sur leurs cadrans, on peut lire le nom d’IWC Schaffhausen et d’aucuns s’étonnent de trouver dans l’idyllique petite ville rhénane une manufacture de montres de réputation mondiale. Géographiquement éloignée des traditionnels centres horlogers helvétiques et dotée d’un nom plutôt atypique pour la Suisse, l’International Watch Company éveille la curiosité quant à ses origines...

Il était une fois un jeune Américain nommé Florentine Ariosto Jones, natif de Boston. Un maître horloger plein d’idéalisme et doté d’un esprit de pionnier sens des affaires. Un billet pour traverser l’Atlantique en poche et un projet ingénieux en tête, il quitte sa terre natale avec l’objectif de faire fabriquer en Suisse – un pays alors réputé pour ses bas salaires – des mouvements de montres de poche de haute précision avec des machines-outils américaines modernes et de révolutionner ainsi l’horlogerie helvétique. En 1868, Jones s’établit à Schaffhausen et fonde l’International Watch Company, un berceau de l’horlogerie fine et novatrice. Implantée non loin des chutes du Rhin, la jeune manufacture exploite l’énergie du fleuve pour sa production avant-gardiste. Le fondateur insuffle à ses successeurs l’esprit créateur et l’amour du métier.

Pour les ingénieurs d’IWC, l’amour de l’horlogerie dépasse l’attachement à la précision du temps. C’est la passion pour une idée fabuleuse. La subtile alliance de la précision et de la créativité. C’est ainsi que depuis plus de 130 ans, IWC se prend un peu plus de temps pour fabriquer ses montres. Dans les sphères des spécialités horlogères, les amateurs d’art horloger louent l’inventivité des ingénieurs de Schaffhouse. Les chronographes exclusifs s’appellent Grande Complication, Da Vinci et Portugaise. Les montres d’aviation, Ingenieur et Aquatimer appartiennent au segment des montres traditionnelles. Avec leur design sport sobre et leur boîtier en acier fin ou en titane, elles sont les compagnes quotidiennes d’hommes actifs. Les ingénieurs d’IWC sont mus – et ils l’ont toujours été – par le goût de l’invention, de la finesse technique et de l’innovation horlogère. Dès 1885, l’unique manufacture établie à l’Est de la Suisse fait parler d’elle, en présentant au monde l’une des premières montres de poche munie d’un indicateur numérique. Et dans la course à la construction de la première montre-bracelet, IWC se trouve, en 1899, largement en tête de peloton.

La production en série de montres-bracelets débute en 1915, avec le calibre 75. «Domiciliés à Schaffhouse – couronnés de succès dans le monde», ce credo motive les «outsiders» géographiques pour défendre avec constance leur position dominante sur la scène horlogère mondiale. Les ingénieurs de Schaffhouse ont une prédilection pour les montres spéciales nécessitant des solutions spécifiques: montres d’aviateur résistant aux champs magnétiques devenues légendaires grâce à la Mark XI, construites pour la Royal Air Force, chronographes spéciaux destinés à la marine, à des sociétés de chemins de fer ou à des hommes-grenouilles – c’est à ces créations qu’IWC doit sa réputation de laboratoire d’idées innovantes.

The dials bear the inscription “IWC Schaffhausen”, and many a person may well be astonished to find a watch manufacturer with a worldwide reputation in this idyllic little town on the River Rhine. Geographically remote from the renowned watchmaking centres in Switzerland and with a name that is anything but Swiss, the International Watch Company arouses curiosity about its origins.

There was once a young American, Florentine Ariosto Jones, from Boston. A master watchmaker with a good measure of pioneering spirit, and shrewd business acumen to boot. With his ticket for the Atlantic crossing in his pocket, he also had an intelligent plan in his head. He set out to manufacture extremely accurate pocket watch movements using modern American production machines and, in so doing, brought about a horological revolution in Switzerland, at the time a low-wage economy. Jones established his business in Schaffhausen in 1868 and founded the International Watch Company, a cradle of creative precision watchmaking. In a location not far from the Rhine Falls, the young manufactory utilized the energy of the river for its modern production.

A legacy of pioneering spirit, verve and ambition were instilled into the manufactory by its founder. For the engineers at IWC, pleasure in watches is more than pleasure in the accurate time. It is enthusiasm for an amazing idea. The interplay between precision and a creative solution. Accordingly, for more than 130 years, IWC has been devoting a tick more time to watches. In the horological specialities segment, watch lovers are full of praise for the creative engineering art from Schaffhausen. Grande Complication, Da Vinci and Portuguese are the names of these exclusive timepieces. Pilot’s watches, Ingenieur and Aquatimer are in the traditional watches/timepieces sector. With their sporting/practical design and cases made of stainless steel or titanium, they are the daily companions of active people.

A passion for brilliant inventions, technical refinements and horological milestones are, and always were, the driving force behind the engineers at IWC. The only manufactory in eastern Switzerland caused a sensation in 1885, when it amazed the world with one of the first pocket watches with a digital display. And in the race to produce the first watch to be worn on the wrist, IWC in 1899 was the global leader in the series production of wristwatches. “At home in Schaffhausen – successful throughout the world”. With this credo, the geographical outsiders steadfastly maintain their leading position. Special watches which offer solutions to specific problems are and were the favourite challenge of the team at Schaffhausen: Antimagnetic pilot’s watches, made legendary through the Mark XI produced for the Royal Air Force, and special timepieces for the Navy, railway companies and scuba-divers earned for IWC the reputation as an innovative ideas powerhouse.
