Au milieu du 19ème siècle, les habitants de Granges vivaient essentiellement de l’agriculture et les terres s’épuisaient progressivement.
Afin d’offrir au village un avenir, le docteur Josef Girard et l’instituteur Urs Schild fondèrent le 7 novembre 1856 l’Ebauches-Fabrik Dr. Girard & Schild, berceau d‘Eterna. Tout d’abord, l’entreprise fabriquait uniquement des ébauches – pièces usinées – et devait faire face à une concurrence puissante.
Mais pour Urs Schild, qui dirigea seul la société à partir de 1866, il n’était pas question d’abandonner : il avait une vision. Il parvint à développer la société et en fit une manufacture qui fabriquait désormais elle-même des montres complètes.
La première montre quitta les ateliers en 1876, date qui marque la naissance d’une légende. La volonté de créer quelque chose de réellement nouveau, d’enrichir le monde horloger a toujours été la force motrice d’Eterna.
L’INDICATOR avec sa fonction de chronographe révolutionnaire et l’Eterna calibre 3030 avec sa surface de mouvement bombée sont des performances faisant office de norme.

C’est grâce à Eterna qu’existe la masse oscillante sur roulement à billes. Ses cinq billes minuscules, qui symbolisent également la marque Eterna, sont devenues LA norme incontestée internationale pour les montres automatiques.
A cela s’ajoutent la première montre réveil, le plus petit mouvement automatique avec masse oscillante en or, la montre à quartz la plus plate de tous les temps avec seulement 0,98 mm d‘épaisseur, le plus petit mouvement à quartz pour les montres féminines et bien d’autres innovations encore.

In the mid-19th century, people in Grenchen lived mainly by farming. To give the village a viable future, the physician Dr. Josef Girard and the schoolmaster Urs Schild founded the movement blank factory Dr. Girard & Schild on 7 November 1856.
That was the origin of Eterna. The partners began by making movement blanks - and soon found themselves exposed to powerful competition. But Urs Schild, who headed up the company on his own, never gave up he had a vision. He succeeded in turning the firm into a manufacture which made all the components for its own watches in-house. In 1876, the first Eterna watch was delivered: That is when the legend truly began.

A determination to create something truly new and enrich the world of watches has always been the driving force behind Eterna. Values, knowledge and tradition rule the art of watchmaking.
The INDICATOR with the revolutionary chronograph function and the Eterna Calibre 3030 with its domed top movement surface are pioneering achievements which set the standard of Swiss watchmaking art.

What would the world of watches be without Eterna? Probably much less eclectic.
But certainly lacking the excitement of many groundbreaking developments. There is plenty of evidence to back this statement. For starters, Eterna created the ball-bearing-mounted rotor for self-winding movements. Its five tiny spheres, which also symbolize the Eterna brand, are the undisputed global standard in automatic wristwatches. Then, there was the world’s very first alarm wristwatch, the smallest self-winding movement with a gold rotor, the thinnest quartz wristwatch of all times with a mere 0.98 mm, the smallest quartz movement for ladies’ watches, and on and on.
For connoisseurs of Swiss quality timepieces, all these accomplishments transformed the name Eterna into a genuine legend.
