1884, Léon BREITLING ouvre à St-Imiez, dans le Jura suisse, un atelier spécialisé dans la fabrication de chronographes et de compteurs de précision pour les sciences et l'industrie.
1892, Pour faire face à la croissance importante de son entreprise, Léon BREITLING déplace ses activités é La Chaux-de-Fonds, qui est alors la métropole de l'horlogerie suisse.
1923, BREITLING développe le premier poussoir de chronographe indépendant. Auparavant, la mise en marche et la remise a zéro s'effectuaient par le biais de la couronne.
1934, BREITLING développe le second poussoir de remise a zéro. Cette invention, qui permet le cumul de plusieurs temps courts successifs, donne au chronographe sa configuration actuelle.
1936, BREITLING devient le fournisseur officiel de la Royal Air Force. C'est le début de la grande coopération avec l'aviation mondiale.

A cette époque, BREITLING fournit déjà les principales compagnies aériennes mondiales en compteurs de bord.
1969, BREITlING invente le mouvement de chronographe à remontage automatique, en collaboration avec Büren et Heuer-Leonidas. Cette prouesse technique représente un progrès important pour l'horlogerie suisse tout entière.
1979, Ernest Schneider - pilote, fabricant de montres et spécialiste en microélectronique - reprend la marque BREITLING de Willy BREITLING, petit-fils du fondateur.
1984, BREITLING donne naissance au CHRONOMAT en collaboration étroite avec la patrouille d'élite "Frecce Tricolori". Avec son boîtier imposant et sa célèbre lunette à cavaliers, le CHRONOMAT signe la relance du chronographe, il deviendra également le best-seller indétrônable de la collection BREITLING.
1999, Le "tout chronomètre": pour couronner plus d'un siècle d'excellence horlogère, bREITLING réalise le pari ambitieux de soumettre au Contrôle Officiel amuisse des Chronomètres l'intégralité de sa production. Une grande première parmi les marques horlogères.
2002, BREITLING CHRONOMÉTRIE, une unité spécialisée dans la fabrication de mouvements de chronographes mécaniques, voit le jour à La Chaux-de-Fonds, la ville où, 110 ans plus tôt, Léon Breitling ouvrait sa première fabrique de chronographes.
