Abraham-Louis Perrelet Inventeur de la montre automatique.
Les témoignages attestant la paternité de cette fabuleuse découverte, qu’est la montre automatique, à Abraham-Louis Perrelet sont légion. Ainsi, en 1777, le professeur Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, l’un des fondateurs de la Société des Arts de Genève, «entreprend un voyage en terre neuchâteloise afin de faire des recherches utiles en visitant les fabriques d’horlogerie et les artisans. Il informe le comité que le sieur Perrelet, horloger au Locle, a fait une montre d’une telle construction qu’elle se remonte dans la poche, par le seul mouvement qu’il fait en marchant et que ce temps suffit pour qu’elle aille pendant huit jours...».

Dans ses notes personnelles, de Saussure écrit «... de là, chez M. Perrelet, l’inventeur des montres qui se remontent par le mouvement de celui qui les porte... Il a été obligé de refaire la première parce qu’il n’avait pas mis un arrêt et que le remontoir agissant toujours avait brisé la montre d’un homme qui courait à la poste. à présent, il a mis un bon arrêt qu’il a eu de la peine à trouver, mais qui suffit.»
Quant à Frédéric-Samuel Osterwald, dont on rappellera qu’il a participé à la rédaction de l’Encyclopédie de Diderot et d’Alembert, il s’enquiert auprès de Jacques-Louis Perrot des nouvelles de l’horlogerie dans les montagnes neuchâteloises. Ce dernier lui répond en ces termes: «Les pièces perpétuelles inventées depuis deux ou trois ans dans nos montagnes font l’objet des curieux et n’ont pas cessé d’augmenter la renommée des lieux; ce sont des montres plus grosses que d’ordinaire qui se remontent d’elles-mêmes, moyennant qu’on les porte sur soi et qu’on fasse quelques tours de chambre pendant la journée, 8 minutes de marche suffisent pour les remonter pour les 24 heures...».

La famille Perrelet constitue une vraie dynastie au service de l’horlogerie. Les descendants d’Abraham-Louis Perrelet dit «l’Ancien» reprennent le flambeau, bien qu’ils n’affichent pas son talent, à l’exception de son petit-fils, Louis-Frédéric (1781-1854) qui inscrit lui aussi son nom dans le domaine des inventions horlogères. Son grand-père le forma et il passa ensuite par «l’école Breguet».
Il s’installa à Paris, oeuvrant pour la Cour française puis pour les têtes couronnées européennes. Parmi ses inventions, des horloges marines aux instruments de mesure, il fit breveter en 1827 un chronographe à rattrapante.

Une partie importante du rotor est sertie d’un verre, ce qui permet d’admirer la finition du mouvement. Les complications proposées dans la collection sont très fonctionnelles et offrent un grand confort de lisibilité. Abraham-Louis Perrelet Inventor of the automatic watch.There are innumerable accounts testifying to this fabulous discovery of inventing the automatic watch by Abraham-Louis Perrelet. Thus, in 1777, Professor Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, one of the founders of the Société des Arts de Genève (Geneva Arts Society), embarked on a journey through the Neuchâtel region to make some useful investigations by visiting the watchmaking manufacturers and craftsmen. He informed the committee that a certain Mr Perrelet, a watchmaker from Le Locle, had made a special watch constructed in such a manner that it wound itself automatically in a person’s pocket just by the movement he made while walking, and that it ran for eight days.
In his personal notes, de Saussure noted: «...from there we went to Mr Perrelet, the inventor of the watch which self-winds just through the movement of the person carrying it ... He had to make the first model again because he hadn’t installed a stop mechanism and, on one occasion, when the self-winding mechanism was shaken too much by a man running to the post office, it broke the watch. Mr Perrelet has now integrated an efficient stop mechanism. He had a lot of trouble finding out how to make it, but it works»
As for Frédéric-Samuel Osterwald, whom you may recall contributed to the editing of the Encyclopaedia of Diderot and d’Alembert, he asked Jacques-Louis Perrot for news about the watchmaking industry in the Neuchâtel Mountains. The latter replied as follows : «The perpetual motion watches which were invented two or three years ago in our mountains have aroused considerable curiosity and have done more than merely bring fame to these parts; these are bigger watches than usual and they are self-winding: all the wearer has to do is to walk around the room several times during the day, 8 minutes’ walk is enough to wind them up for 24 hours…».

The Perrelet family constitutes a true dynasty in watchmaking. The descendants of Abraham-Louis Perrelet, known as «the elder», took up the torch, although they did not have his talent, with the exception of his grandson, Louis-Frédéric (1781-1854), whose name also went down in the history of watchmaking inventions.
His grandfather trained him, and he completed his education at «L’Ecole Breguet». He set up business in Paris, working for the French Court and then the European royalty.
His inventions included marine watches with measuring instruments, and he patented a split second precision chronograph in 1827.

An important part of this rotor is glass-covered, showing off the movement’s meticulous finish to its full advantage. The complications introduced by the collection are both highly functional and extremely easy to read.
